What Segment does
Segment (analytics.js) is a routing layer: a single Segment snippet captures your events and fans them out to dozens of downstream destinations — ad pixels, analytics, CRMs and warehouses. Blocking Segment can cut off many trackers at the source.
What it collects
- Page views and custom events
- A persistent anonymous (and, once identified, user) ID
- Traits forwarded to many third-party destinations
Should you block Segment?
Because Segment distributes your activity to many other tools at once, it amplifies tracking. Blocking it is an efficient way to reduce downstream data sharing.
How to block Segment
- Install the free GeraGuard extension for Chrome.
- Tracker blocking is on by default — GeraGuard blocks Segment and other analytics trackers using regularly updated filter lists, with no setup required.
- Confirm it is blocked by opening the GeraGuard panel, or run the page through the Privacy Scanner.
