Telegram vs WhatsApp

Telegram

Telegram stores your regular chats in its cloud so they sync across devices. Those cloud chats are encrypted between you and Telegram’s servers, but Telegram can technically access them. End-to-end encryption is only applied to opt-in one-to-one Secret Chats. The client apps are open source; the server is proprietary.

Privacy strengths

  • Large channels, bots and big group features
  • Open-source client apps
  • Optional Secret Chats add end-to-end encryption for one-to-one messages

Caveats

  • !Default cloud chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted — Telegram can technically access them
  • !Group chats are never end-to-end encrypted
  • !The server software is closed source

WhatsApp

WhatsApp uses the Signal Protocol to end-to-end encrypt message and call content for every chat by default. Because it is owned by Meta, it collects substantial metadata — who you talk to, when and how often — which can be shared across Meta’s services. The app itself is closed source.

Privacy strengths

  • End-to-end encryption of message content is on by default
  • Nearly everyone already has it, so contacts are easy to reach
  • Optional encrypted backups

Caveats

  • !Owned by Meta and collects extensive metadata (contacts, timing, usage)
  • !Closed source, so the encryption cannot be independently inspected
  • !Metadata can be used across Meta’s wider ad ecosystem

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Telegram and WhatsApp?

Telegram: Telegram is a cloud-based messaging app whose ordinary chats are encrypted in transit and at rest but are not end-to-end encrypted by default. WhatsApp: WhatsApp is a Meta-owned messaging app that end-to-end encrypts message content by default but collects metadata about how you use it.

Which is more private by default, Telegram or WhatsApp?

Telegram — Not end-to-end by default (only opt-in Secret Chats are). WhatsApp — End-to-end by default for message content. Choose based on which default matches how you use it.

Are Telegram and WhatsApp open source?

Telegram: partly open source. WhatsApp: no, closed source.

Are Telegram chats end-to-end encrypted?

Only opt-in Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted. Regular cloud chats and all group chats are encrypted to Telegram’s servers but not end-to-end, so Telegram can technically access them.

Is WhatsApp private if it is end-to-end encrypted?

Message content is end-to-end encrypted, but WhatsApp still collects metadata — who you message, when and how often — and is owned by Meta, which limits how private it is overall.
