Best Private Messaging Apps

The messenger you choose decides who can read your conversations. Here is how the mainstream apps compare on default encryption, what metadata they collect, and who operates them — so you can pick the right one for how you message.

Signal

Signal Foundation (non-profit)

Signal encrypts every message, call and attachment end-to-end using the open Signal Protocol, which is also used under the hood by several other apps. The apps and the protocol are open source, and the Signal Foundation is funded by donations and grants rather than advertising.

Strengths

  • Every chat, group and call is end-to-end encrypted by default
  • Open-source clients and protocol that can be independently audited
  • Stores very little metadata — no ad profile is built from your activity
  • Disappearing messages and per-chat controls are built in

Caveats

  • !Requires a phone number to register (though usernames can hide it from contacts)
  • !Smaller network than mainstream apps, so contacts may not be on it yet

Telegram

Telegram FZ-LLC

Telegram stores your regular chats in its cloud so they sync across devices. Those cloud chats are encrypted between you and Telegram’s servers, but Telegram can technically access them. End-to-end encryption is only applied to opt-in one-to-one Secret Chats. The client apps are open source; the server is proprietary.

Strengths

  • Large channels, bots and big group features
  • Open-source client apps
  • Optional Secret Chats add end-to-end encryption for one-to-one messages

Caveats

  • !Default cloud chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted — Telegram can technically access them
  • !Group chats are never end-to-end encrypted
  • !The server software is closed source

WhatsApp

Meta

WhatsApp uses the Signal Protocol to end-to-end encrypt message and call content for every chat by default. Because it is owned by Meta, it collects substantial metadata — who you talk to, when and how often — which can be shared across Meta’s services. The app itself is closed source.

Strengths

  • End-to-end encryption of message content is on by default
  • Nearly everyone already has it, so contacts are easy to reach
  • Optional encrypted backups

Caveats

  • !Owned by Meta and collects extensive metadata (contacts, timing, usage)
  • !Closed source, so the encryption cannot be independently inspected
  • !Metadata can be used across Meta’s wider ad ecosystem

Frequently asked questions

Is Signal really private?

Signal end-to-end encrypts all messages and calls by default and is engineered to hold minimal metadata, which is why it is widely recommended by security researchers.

Are Telegram chats end-to-end encrypted?

Only opt-in Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted. Regular cloud chats and all group chats are encrypted to Telegram’s servers but not end-to-end, so Telegram can technically access them.

Is WhatsApp private if it is end-to-end encrypted?

Message content is end-to-end encrypted, but WhatsApp still collects metadata — who you message, when and how often — and is owned by Meta, which limits how private it is overall.
